DIY Convert an old refrigerator into a root cellar.
Root cellars keep vegetables fresh for a very long time in comparison to other methods and they are an amazing addition to any home. There is a pretty nifty way to turn an old refrigerator into a very practical (and nice looking) root cellar thanks to the people over at the Walden Effect. Do you have a refrigerator laying around? if so then this is basically a free project, if you do not mind putting your back and elbows to work.
The primary function of a root cellar is to keep your food stock at a steady humidity and low temperature. By doing this food does not freeze in the winter as well as keep cool during the warm summer months, preventing your food from spoiling.
Usually one would store a variety of vegetables harvested in the fall into a root cellar. If you don’t like to grow things to eat, but do have a taste for adult beverages, a secondary use for a root cellar is to store your wine and other home made alcoholic drinks in for preservation.
My Husband did this around 20 years ago it’s still holding up.
